Explore Square One Rialto

Square One Rialto, located at Ground Floor/525 Collins St, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia, is a charming new addition to Melbourne's bustling café scene. Situated in the iconic Rialto building, this venue is a collaboration by The Mulberry Group, and it brings a fresh take on Australian brunch culture with its unique menu offerings. Opened in August 2023, it quickly became known for its innovative dishes and warm, inviting atmosphere.

The café offers a menu that combines classic favorites with exciting, regionally inspired creations sourced from all over Australia. The venue’s atmosphere is comfortable and cozy, making it an ideal spot to enjoy a leisurely meal. The two-floor layout adds to the charm, with a dedicated counter for takeaway orders upstairs, allowing staff to focus on serving the guests dining in downstairs. The service is friendly and efficient, with Katie, the venue manager, standing out for her professional and helpful nature.

Coffee enthusiasts will appreciate Square One Rialto’s expertly crafted drinks. The magic coffee, known for its balanced and well-extracted flavors, has garnered praise for being spot on. If you’re looking for a memorable meal, dishes like the Bacon & Egg Tart by Gareth Whitton of Tarts Anon and the Salted Cod are not to be missed. The Salted Cod, with its bold, salty flavors and generous portions, is a complex dish that stands out, served with charcoal toasted sourdough and a refreshing hint of lemon juice.

The café also excels with its take on traditional brunch fare, including a standout French toast that has the texture of a sponge cake once the cream is absorbed into the toast. While some dishes, like the sausage muffin, may be a little oily, the overall experience is positive, making Square One Rialto a place to revisit for both locals and newcomers.

IG: @ediblemelbourne UPDATE Returned and once again … hands down amazing food, great coffee and lovely service. Katie is so kind and professional, ask her about her favorite dishes, she is very very helpful! I tried the Bacon & Egg Tart Gareth Whitton of Tarts Anon. It was amazing. So much flavor. I want to go through the whole menu so bad! —— A COLLABORATIVE MENU WITH AMAZING DISHES FROM AROUND AUSTRALIA AND THEIR OWN STAPLES I walked in without knowing the concept of this new café and, boy, was I in for a treat. Housed in the Rialto building in a wonderful two-floor venue is the new kid on the block, Square One Coffee Roasters by The Mulberry Group. They only opened on Monday, 21 August 2023, so I was really excited to try it. I was seated and given a menu promptly. Ordered a magic and it was spot on, delicious coffee, well balanced and perfectly extracted (the connoisseurs will know the difficulty in getting a magic right - no, it's not a double shot). Katie, the venue manager, looked after me and explained the concept of the store. On one side of the menu, they have collected recipes from all over Australia, the crème de la crème, and additionally their own house specialties. I decided on the Salted Cod, and it was an excellent choice. It is a very generous serve but not for the faint of heart; it is deliciously salty and complex with lots of garlic and boiled greens that provide relief to the dish, served with charcoal toasted sourdough and lemon juice. It was a great experience; the limited availability of brunch in the CBD was craving for a new venue and these guys deliver. Cannot wait to return.

Great restaurant. Ordered the French toast as I haven't had FT in a long time, and it was amazing. Once the cream is absorbed by the toast a little bit the texture is like sponge cake. Would definitely come here again. (I'm someone that typically only leaves a review if I'm very happy or very unhappy with a business, so that should be something indication how much I enjoyed this food )

Such a beautiful space inside. Very comfortable and cosy for a meal. The service was fast and friendly, they have a separate counter for takeaway orders upstairs, which leaves staff available to tend to people dining in downstairs. The drinks were fast and tasty, food wasn't as good as we'd hoped, with the sausage muffin being quite oily and the almond croissant being a little dry. Otherwise a good experience.

We went there for breakfast. It was very good. I had the avocado toast. The feta they add gives a nice salty taste to it. The dill and radish additions were great too. I tried my daughter's French toast and it was excellent, as well as my wife's gronola. The coffee was a bit too bitter to my taste, as it tends to be in Australia and I wish the poached egg's taste was a bit less watery. We had a great time overall.

This a very aesthetic cafe with pretty interior along Collins street. There are two levels with the top level being takeaway only and then ground level is dining in. It’s a common stop over for the offices near-by. The menu is quite unique and has interesting ingredients. I had the pastrami and swiss cheese rye sandwich. It was very tasty and perfectly salty. I also loved the side salad which if you like you can have chips instead. My friend had the spinach and cheese paszteciki, which she found makes a bit of salt and had more spinach than cheese. She also liked the accompanying dill salad. Coffee was nice but not as strong as I would have liked it.
